Hammer Of The Gods had its premiere at Film 4‘s Frightfest and we managed to get a few words with stars Charlie Bewley, Michael Jibson and Ivan Kaye.
Up first is Charlie Bewley best known from the Twilight Saga and The Vampire Diaries
In Hammer Of The gods you play Steinar tell us about him
Highly conflicted Viking living in a barbaric community but he’s a prince so he basically gets to do what he likes, a possible heir to the throne so he takes his morals and wisdom forward. He takes off on a mission to find his long lost brother. He’s a real enigma and ultimately he finds himself he finds the compromise for what he wants for an extremely evolved thinking Viking and what the populace wants. There in leads a great escape for the crew.
It’s a very physical role was that a factor in choosing this role?
People always ask me why I did it but I looked at it and thought I’m going to be on my feet all the time fighting all the time and I’m like bring it on cause I was so sick of sitting down acting
Do you have a favourite battle scene?
Every fight scene was totally different every fight scene was a lot of fun I couldn’t pick one, there are 5 massive fight scenes each one completely different couldn’t pick one
So you’ve done physical and psychological roles which do you prefer?
I like both, this role was a bit of both. It’s not like I’m just going out there hacking people to death. There is a real motive behind it. Ultimately I should be hacking more people to death but Steinar is a man of reason slightly enlightened within his band of brothers and that creates abrasion and he gets in a lot of trouble for it
You were recently in Vampire Diaries can you tell us about your time there?
Short and sweet was there 5 weeks wonderful set wonderful cast. I died 5 times. American TV is fun for a little bit but not something I would do for long.
Would you consider more TV work in future?
I’m easy really it just has to be right, and movies are such fun as they such hi-stakes , this film was no exception was from first to last on budget on time all really pulled together to make it great.
Hammer Of The Gods is premiering at this year’s Frightfest, why do you think this movie belongs here?
The problem with other festivals is they pick the picture apart saying “this isn’t gladiator”, it isn’t meant to be! This is about guts death and a lot of fun perfect for this festival
Is it a role you would like to return to if a sequel was offered?
Yeah no doubt

Yeah no doubt
We are now joined by two of the staring Vikings; Michael Jibson and Ivan Kaye
Could you both tell us a bit about the characters you play?
Michael Jibson: I play a character called Grim, he’s grim by name grim by nature he’s the crazy one of the bunch
So the comedy relief then?
Michael Jibson: [laughing] yeah he kind of is isn’t he?
Ivan Kaye: yeah but he is still the most dangerous out of his crew
Michael Jibson: yeah so that’s him really in a nutshell. There are four main Vikings and im one of the four and I would say I’m the one you need to keep on a very short lead
Ivan Kaye: I’m a berserker; I left the fold of the Vikings some time ago and disappeared with the guy they searching for. So I’ve gone a bit AWOL and bush and am a bit of a liability to have on your side as I will kill anything wilily nilly. I don’t have any tactics I’m just a psychopathic berserker.
So you just went method in Wales running around waving your axe?
Ivan Kaye: yeah just had to look at the locals and there i was in character
The roles are very physical how much training did you have to go through to be ready for the shoot?
Michael Jibson: we did quite a lot of rehearsal before each fight, especially one that included 20-30 men and only 4 of us taking them all out. Was rehearsed for a couple of days before
Ivan Kaye: Our schedule would be watching our stunt team doing it and we film it on out phones go back to hotel and work it out with other people
Michael Jibson :Its chorography in a way, kinda like a dance routine I suppose, it had to be safe were not really cutting people’s heads off, well I wasn’t [laughs] when you’re an actor and your used to drinking wine every night and then you’re throwing axes about and you end up trapping nerves , it can be quiet embarrassing.
Is it nice to breakout, be these wild characters. Being visceral and blocking out the normal day-to-day issues you usually have?
Ivan Kaye: don’t have to worry about make up slipping, no makeup could survive those conditions, but yeah it’s wonderful to just go mad and go bush.
Why do you think a film like Hammer Of The Gods fits with the Frightfest crowd?
Michael Jibson : I think Frightfest is such a wonderful place to showcase a film like this another corner of this genre, and to meet the fans who really pull the weight in this type genre.
Hammer Of The Gods is released on Blu Ray/DVD 2nd September find more info here
